Fencing · Northamptonshire

Fencing that is still straight in ten winters.

A fence is the first thing anyone sees of a garden and the first thing to blow down if it is built badly. We set posts in concrete to the right depth, use concrete posts and gravel boards where the ground is wet, and fit panels or closeboard so they can be replaced one at a time rather than the whole run. Usually done as part of a garden transformation; happy to do it on its own.

01 · Fencing

Closeboard and panel fencing

Closeboard is built on site from individual feather-edge boards and lasts longest; panels are quicker and cheaper and look fine between concrete posts. We fit both, on timber or concrete posts, with gravel boards so the timber never sits in the wet.

  • Closeboard (feather-edge) fencing
  • Lap and hit-and-miss panels
  • Concrete posts and gravel boards
  • Timber posts where the look matters more
  • Trellis toppers and capping rails

02 · Fencing

Post-and-wire and stock fencing

For paddocks, larger plots and gardens that back onto fields: pressure-treated posts, strained wire and stock netting, done properly with straining posts at the corners.

  • Post-and-wire with straining posts
  • Stock and rabbit netting
  • Post-and-rail
  • Field and garden gates

Boundaries as part of the garden

A new fence is cheap while the digger is already there. If we are doing the garden, the fence line gets cleared, the posts go in before the lawn, and the whole thing is finished together.

  • Old fences removed and disposed of
  • Fence lines cleared and levelled
  • Fencing sequenced before turf and paving
  • Painted or stained to a finish you choose

Why preparation matters

The bit you never see is the bit you’re paying for.

Posts set properly

600mm in the ground in postcrete, more on exposed runs. The post is what fails; ours do not.

Timber kept out of the wet

Gravel boards under every panel so the boards do not rot from the bottom.

One panel at a time

Built so a damaged panel comes out and a new one goes in without touching the rest.

How much does garden fencing cost?

As a guide, closeboard on concrete posts runs £90 to £140 per linear metre installed; panel fencing £65 to £100. Removal of the old fence is extra. Fixed price after we have measured it.

Do I need permission for a fence?

Not up to 2 metres high in a back garden, or 1 metre next to a highway. Listed buildings and conservation areas are different; we will tell you.

Concrete or timber posts?

Concrete lasts longest and does not rot. Timber looks nicer. On wet ground or an exposed run we would push you towards concrete; in a sheltered cottage garden, timber is fine.
